The debate over the laws governing driving times and the introduction of tachos into vans under 3.5 tons continues across Europe. Certain factions of the European parliament are pushing for the introduction of the tachos into vans under 3.5 tons in order to better manage the driving times and associated risks. Left leaning parties are fighting for this introduction along with the Social Affairs and Transport committees. They believe the associated fatigue of driving long hours means that van drivers are equally exposed to the higher risk of accidents on the road. Many fleet managers are fighting this change as the associated costs and paper work will reduce productivity and margins at a time when the haulage sector has been hit hard by the economic downturn.
